A Dubai-bound flight was asked to abort take-off because of a bird, Times of India reported.
The Air India plane, carrying over 100 passengers, had to abort take-off due to a dead bird lying on the IGI airport runway, late Thursday night.
The aircraft was on a "take-off roll" when it was asked by the air traffic control to abort take off.
"The aircraft that used the runway before us reported the presence of the dead bird to the ATC. But by then we had already begun rolling for take-off. Had our plane been a little faster, the tyres could have burst. It was a close call," said a senior AI official.
As per standard operating procedure, the plane had to go back to the bay to allow its brakes to cool, after which the flight took off.
A senior airline pilot said Indian airports do not have radars to detect foreign objects on runways. Most airports run jeeps with spotters to check runways after every few aircraft movements, TOI reported.
The dead bird was apparently spotted by a woman commander of a Vistara aircraft, which had landed from Chandigarh.
