Two popular app-based taxi services Uber and Careem have abruptly halted operations in Abu Dhabi because of "unforeseen circumstances", according to reports on Sunday.
However, Uber and Careem services in Dubai remain unaffected by the announcement.
The suspension of Uber and Careem services was met with surprise on social media by many users in Abu Dhabi. "Suspending all service in Abu Dhabi? Is this a long term thing? Use you guys all the time. Hope issues get worked out quickly!" one man tweeted.
"Operations in Dubai continue as usual and we will keep you posted when we resume the Abu Dhabi Operations," the company tweeted to one concerned passenger.
In a statement, Uber said that the move was "temporary", but declined to give any information on what prompted the suspension.
"We want to let you know that this was a decision taken by both companies, and our goal is to resume operations in Abu Dhabi as soon as possible," a statement issued to Associated Press read.
The company has operated in the UAE since 2013, although local regulations mean that only licensed limousine drivers can drive for the services, in contrast to other countries, where individuals can sign on as Uber drivers.
In its statement Careem said that it decided to suspend services after some cars were stopped by authorities. "Until we have further clarification on the situation, Careem has decided to temporarily limit services in Abu Dhabi to avoid any inconvenience this may cause," the company said, as quoted by AP, without elaborating any further.
Abu Dhabi officials could not be reached for comment on Sunday.
