The Abu Dhabi Police are using innovative ways to warn motorists using external roads to reduce their speed while driving in foggy conditions.
In a statement issued on Monday, Abu Dhabi Police said they are currently using four warning methods, including sending early alert messages about foggy conditions; the reduction of speed limits on external roads via the police’s social media accounts and smart applications; alerts displayed on smart gate screens, and displaying alert messages on the electronic sign boards on the right side of roads.
The penalty for not adhering to safe driving instructions during fog is Dh500 and four black points, according to the Federal Traffic Law.
Police explained that lowering speed limits during hazardous weather conditions like fog, dust-storms and rains is a preventive measure aimed at reducing road accidents that occur due to low visibility.
The maximum speed on Abu Dhabi highways is dropped to 80km/p/h during such conditions. “Motorists have to commit to this speed limit for their own safety and that of other road users,” said police.
Authorities also urged motorists to avoid overtaking, use low lights, not to use hazard lights, and listen to awareness messages distributed by police so as to avoid crashes.
Tips for driving in fog:
- Keep adequate distance between vehicles.
- Adjust your speed so you can always stop within the line of visibility ... Slow down!
- Concentrate and do not get distracted by your passengers, your phone or other things
- Turn on the lights: low beam head lights, front and rear fog lights (no hazard lights!)
- Care for others, especially for weaker traffic participants like motorcycle drivers, bicycle riders and pedestrians.
- Keep in your lane and avoid overtaking other vehicles.
- Ensure your glass wipers are in good working condition, especially those of windscreens and rear windows.
