A new 42km long arterial road is being built in Sharjah, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development announced on Monday.
The major road will start from Al Badea intersection on Emirates road and end at the Shaikh Khalifa intersection. The development work spans the maintenance of the existing road, and will add a third lane in both directions. “The new road will also have hard shoulders, whereas the concrete barriers will be replaced with iron ones to prevent sand accumulation,” Eng Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director of Roads Department at the ministry, said.
The road development is slated to cost approximately Dh174mn, and the arterial route off Maleha road is expected to be completed in 2018’s second quarter, as part of the initiatives of His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.
“We will be connecting two points which sees busy traffic all through the week. Therefore, we had to adopt an innovative way to avoid traffic disruption during the two-year project,” he noted. To solve this problem, the ministry has decided to add 28 road diversions in both directions. These include six detours every 3km on both ways, to significantly help reduce traffic congestion on the busy arterial road.
Al Hammadi pointed out that each part of the road that included the six road diversions will be completed in three months, and that the new road aimed to prevent accidents and regular knots of traffic.
