Ajman Police fined 1652 jaywalkers from June 26 to July 13, 2017 for crossing the roads from undesignated cross-areas in the roads.
The fines were issued during inspection campaign targeted at the violating pedestrians. It was part of the police efforts to achieve the Ministry of Interior strategic goals which aimed at ensuring maximum traffic safety.
Lieutenant Colonel Saif Abdullah Al Falasi, Deputy Director of Traffic and Patrol Department of Ajman Police said that this inspection campaign has intensified as the result of the high number of run over accidents, due to failing of crossing roads from designated areas. "It has been noticed that many of pedestrians are lazy to use crossing zones area and pedestrian bridges, exposing their lives to danger." he said.
Lt. Col Al Falasi stressed that the campaign resulted in issuing fines for 1652 violating pedestrians during the three-week period. These pedestrians who were caught crossing the road before the implementation date of the law were slapped with fine of Dh 200. Those caught violating the law from July 1 to July 13 received fine of Dh 400.
"Majority of the violators are Asians, Africans," he further commented.
Al Falasi stressed that the violations were issued based on the article no 89 in the amended traffic law of 2017.
He urged the pedestrians of crossing the roads from designated areas and use the foot bridges, zebra crossing, stressing that the inspection will continue to penalize the violators.
