A committee affiliated with Sharjah Social Services has approved 13 applications for child adoption.
The Abandoned Children Committee has received 25 applications from families, of which it found 13 meeting all the criterion to serve as alternative parents of the abandoned children.
According to an official at Social Services the committee has been launched to work for the benefit of the abandoned children.

Who can adopt children in UAE
Afaf Al Meri, Chairperson of Social Services Department, said only UAE nationals who have good housing and income can apply for adoption. Also, the fostering mother must provide natural breast feeding in order to develop an attachment with family. For the unmarried women who wish to adopt a baby, their age must not be less than 35 years.
The members meet periodically to select the best parents for the abandoned children who can ensure them healthy family atmosphere as well as transform them into good citizens who can contribute to the development of the society and country.
Ahmed Al Tartoor, Director of Child Protection Department, said that the committee has already handed over five children to alternative families who are now providing them with best care under the follow and supervision of the department.
Now, only 14 children are remaining in the child care centre of the department, awaiting families who can take care of them.
"Most of the fostering families prefer new born or children less than one year with good health conditions," Al Tartoor said.
