A number of initiatives including switching off lights for one hour was launched in the emirate to support the peak hour initiative, according to a top official.
Dr Rashid Al Leem, chairman of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) told Khaleej Times that the 12 initiatives to save energy include rationalisation hour, peak hour stars, rationalisation partners, peak hour marathon, creation of peak man, be a winner with project and rationalisation leaders. The projects will be implemented in cooperation with the Islamic Affairs Department and the clean energy leaders project with the Women's Union in Sharjah.
Dr Al Leem added that over 2,300 individuals and establishments took part in the rationalisation hour initiative last year. Though the initiative got huge support from private and government establishments during the last two years, it has attracted a large number of establishments and owners of villas and building from various part of the UAE as well as the GCC, and Arab countries.
Next year the number is expected to increase and cover all parts of the country and region.
"The owners will put the light off in their villas, building for one hour," Dr Al Leem added.
He said that the rationalisation hour initiative has seen numerous positive results. It has reached several people and institutions who have participated by turning off unnecessary devices during the peak hours.
Monza bin Dekhain, director of the awareness department, said that 32 government authorities and 32 other officials signed the Rationalisation Hour certificate from outside Sharjah. They also saw participation from 72 private and 514 public sector companies as well as 1,670 electronic pledges.

The Rationalisation Hour initiative would help to draw attention to the importance of reducing load, especially during peak hours, to preserve energy and reduce emissions.
The initiative aims to raise awareness on the ideal use of energy, reduce emissions by turning off unnecessary devices and ensure periodic maintenance.
