Environment inspection teams from the Department of Public Works and Services in Ras Al Khaimah have issued fines on 1,100 residents for littering public areas.
Ahmed Hamad Al Shehi, manager of public services at the department, said their Raqib or monitor patrols have significantly cut anti-environment violations.
"We are planning to launch more environment patrols in other areas, spanning as Al Rams, Al Muairidh and southern areas to ensure full coverage of the emirate."
"Residents are urged to observe environment rules and stop littering public areas and leaving waste behind at desert camping areas.
"The department has provided waste containers at all these sites to ensure safe and environment-friendly collection and removal of garbage."
More attention is being given to nine 'hot spots' where littering and most anti-environment activities were recorded. "These included public roads, parks, beaches and tourist places," he said, urging the public to report any violation to toll free number 8008118.
Obstructing traffic flow by parking at prohibited areas on Jebel Jais and Corniche roads is strictly banned, Al Shehi warned. "An immediate fine of Dh500 shall be slapped on violators."
Yusuf Ismael, deputy chairman of the RAK Transport Authority, said 38 environment-friendly air-conditioned public bus stops will be built in different areas of the emirate. "These bus stops will be powered by solar energy."
Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director-General of the Public Works and Services Department, said the department will be responsible for the infrastructure of these bus stops. "The location of these stops is yet to be decided."
