A total of 102 houses were demolished by the planning and survey department in Umm Al Quwain, in a bid to develop the Old Town.
New infrastructure facilities are to be replaced as part of the urban and civilised development of the emirate.
Jamal Al Shehi, director of the department, said the removed houses were part of the phase one of the mega project.
"As many as 156 houses at Freej Al Shyukh (Sheikhs District) will be demolished in May as part of the second phase of the project.
After the demolition, the lands will be paved and the entire area will be cleaner, he said.
The department had earlier contacted the owners of these houses and informed them about the project plan, said Al Shehi. "Recently licensed houses remained untouched as per the plan of the Old Town."
Meanwhile, the antiquities and heritage department in Umm Al Quwain had started archaeological excavations at a new archeological site in the emirate.
Named 'Umm Al Quwain 14', the site has found excavations dated back to the Iron Age (1st millennium BC), according to Alia Al Ghafli, director-general of the department. "It is located at the Al Abrak-2 area. Various artefacts were found at the site including bronze jewels and arrowheads."
