Schools in Sharjah will implement 100 per cent e-learning for students for the first two weeks of the new academic term. In-person classes are set to begin across the country on August 30.
In a circular sent to schools, the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) said online-only learning will apply till September 10. "This decision is in the interest of the safety of students and the educational staff, guaranteeing the success of the new academic year," it stated.
The authority tweeted on Tuesday: "The situation is being continuously monitored and we will keep sharing the updates." Educators in Sharjah have welcomed the decision, saying it will give them time to ensure that all students are Covid-negative.
Zafar Ali, principal of Leaders Private School, said: "It is a wise move as we are only a few days away from reopening. We definitely need two more weeks to ensure that all returning students undergo Covid-19 tests as has been mandated by the SPEA. Within the next two weeks, we will also have a better picture of the general scenario. Due to rising cases in the past few days, parents are apprehensive about sending their children to school."
Other school leaders said more time will allow them to better "streamline operations". Arogya Reddy, principal of Ambassador School Sharjah, said: "We appreciate this decision by the SPEA as the rising number of cases of Covid-19 is alarming for everyone."
Teresa Varman, principal, GEMS Millennium School, Sharjah, said providing a safe learning environment is of "paramount importance". "We respect this decision that has been taken keeping in mind the safety of students and staff. We are committed to ensuring the success of the new academic year."
