Major roads in Sharjah will have more flyovers, subways, and pedestrian crossings soon, even as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in the emirate has already built medians on 40 per cent of them. It is also installing iron railings in medians on the major roads to prevent people from crossing them and endangering their lives.

The proposed projects, to meet people’s needs, are aimed to boost traffic flow and protect road users’ lives, according to a senior official.
Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Al Hajiri, Director for Roads Affairs at the authority, on Wednesday said the mega scheme involves the installation of median railings to a total length of 8,000 metres costing Dh4.3 million.
“Iron barriers are being installed in the medians of vital roads which have recently seen a number of run-over accidents, killing and injuring jaywalkers.”
Al Hajiri said the projects, in line with the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, are being closely followed up by Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.
The iron dividers are being fixed on Ittihad Road from Al Nahda Bridge to Al Nahda Intersection.
“Some others are installed on Al Wahda Road from Al Khulafa Al Rashideen Bridge to Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Road extending from the Abu Shagara Tunnel to the bridge to Industrial Area 2.”
Al Hajiri said the important project will boost traffic flow, ensure road users’ safety, and curb accidents, particularly the run-over accidents involving jaywalkers.
“The public are urged to use the subways and flyovers in the emirate and cross the roads from pedestrian crossings.”
Al Hajiri also announced that more flyovers, subways, and pedestrian crossings would be built soon to meet people’s needs.
