Road deaths down by 34 per cent in Abu Dhabi

Fatalities and critical injuries due to traffic accidents saw a drop in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

As many as 71 people were killed in the first three months of this year as compared to 107 deaths over the equivalent period in 2011 constituting a drop by 34 per cent. Likewise, critical injury cases fell from 110 in 2011 to 76 in 2012 showing a drop by 31 per cent.As for other traffic accidents, a total of 543 vehicular accidents were reported over the first three months in 2012 as against 622 last year, ranging between runover, turnover and car crash crashes, showing a drop of 13 per cent.

“The ongoing improvement in traffic safety indicator is the result of applying a long term plan and an integrated scheme laid by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate in 2010,” said Engineer Hussain Ahmed Al Harthi, Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi police.
