According to Dubai’s General Department of Traffic statistics, 66 people were killed and 929 people were injured in 638 accidents during the period. The statistics showed a drastic jump in number of deaths compared to 38 deaths in 2012, with the number of accidents remaining the same.

Department Director Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin said that it was regretful that traffic accident deaths had reached such a high number during this period, despite awareness campaigns and deployment of police patrols.

In each of the fatal accidents, more than one person were killed so the number rose up to this extent, he said. There were 444 accidents caused by private cars which resulted in 45 deaths and 664 injuries; motorcycles caused 44 accidents resulting in two deaths and seven serious injuries; small vans caused 40 accidents which resulted in four deaths; taxis caused 29 accidents which led to two deaths while heavy trucks caused 27 accidents leading to four deaths and mini buses caused 25 accidents which caused seven deaths and 59 injuries.

Al Zafin said bicycles had caused three accidents which resulted in one death and two injuries.
