Traffic Chief Prosecutor Salah Bu Farroucha Al Felasi said that the defendants, who are of different nationalities, were involved in serious traffic offences. “There was a remarkable decrease in such traffic offences in comparison with April 2012. Apart from the suspension of licences, the traffic offenders were given jail sentences and slapped with fines”.

Three defendants, who caused the death of others’, had their licences suspended for three months. “Eighty-six others, who drove under the influence of alcohol, had their licences suspended also for three months.”

The driving licences of four other defendants have also been suspended for driving under the influence of narcotics, with fourteen others suspended for different periods of time for various offences. “As many as 149 driving licences were suspended in April last year for different offences and for different periods of time. Six of them were accused of causing others’ death.”

Al Felasi explained that the decrease in the serious traffic offences can be attributed to the constant recommendations by the Traffic Prosecution to inflict the severe penalties on serious traffic offenders as per the enforced laws.

The chief prosecutor noted that according to the last modification of the Federal Traffic Law of 2007, the Traffic Court may suspend the driving licences of serious offenders for some time.
