Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Obaid bin Aran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department of the UAQ Police Directorate-General, told Khaleej Times that the roads of Umm Al Quwain saw 22 pedestrian accidents, leading to five deaths in 2012.

“Hopefully, the number will drop this year with only three people injured in similar mishaps so far.”

Adding, he said the campaign billed ‘Let Them Walk Safe’, is meant to curb all types of traffic accidents and their terrible consequences, particularly hit-and-run and run-over mishaps.

“We have already distributed hundreds of brochures to develop awareness about such hazards urging pedestrians to cross the road from designated areas and flyovers, and motorists to observe speed limit and give priority to pedestrians.”

Giving an example, Major Obaid Ali, Director of the City Comprehensive Police Station, said a 29-year-old Sri Lankan woman received severe injuries following a hit-and-run accident on King Faisal Road.

“The woman motorist was blamed because she failed to notice the victim who was crossing the road.”
