According to a senior official, all the reports implying that the Arabs do not feel like using Sharjah Transport services are baseless, particularly with the operation of nine more bus routes that have started at areas known to have a thick Arab population.

Rabaa Al Marzouqi, head of franchise section at the corporation, on Wednesday told Khaleej Times that they are gaining popularity among all nationalities staying in the emirate.

“Most suggestions, comments and complaints we receive at our round-the-clock call centre (600525252) come from Arab residents, and that mean they top the list of beneficiaries from our services.”

Adding, she said most of the Arabs using Sharjah Transport’s shuttle service are located in densely populated areas.

“These include Al Nahda area, as well as Jamal Abdul Nasser and Al Wahda roads.” Elaborating, Al Marzouqi said Sharjah Transport’s 228 public buses were used by nine million passengers in 2012. “These included four million in Sharjah and five million on intercity bus routes.” Indicating that the corporation’s bus fleet ran about 100,000 trips last year in comparison to over 51,000 in the first three months of this year, she said that there are now six main bus stations in the emirate.

“These are at the Sharjah International Airport, Al Rolla, Al Sharq, Muweilah, Al Etihad, and Al Sagah,” she said, noting that the bus stops built in Sharjah city have now reached 520 and cover 222km.” Al Marzouqi then urged the public to use public transport. “This will help reduce traffic congestion, decrease accidents’ casualties, and curb carbon emissions in a more efficient way.”

Urging cooperation, Al Marzouqi said Sharjah Transport receive tens of suggestions, inquiries and complaints from the public at the Call Centre: (600545455). “All these are professionally sorted out and handled within 48 hours.”

Rashid Mahboob, manager of Al Jubail Bus Station, said the intercity buses in Sharjah transported over five million passengers last year. “This shuttle service is connecting the emirates of Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, as well as Masafi, Khorfakkan, Al Hamriyah Free Zone, Al Dhaid, Kalba, and Dibba.”
