Our GCC neighbours offer several attractions for a quick getaway
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the fourth edition of the Public Transport Day to be observed on Friday under the theme: “Progress With Dubai”.
The use of the Dubai Metro, public buses and water buses will be offered free of charge for Nol card holders on the day.
Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said that the initiative, staged on November 1 each year, is aimed at encouraging various segments of the community to leave their personal vehicles at home and move over to using the various public transport means available in the Emirate of Dubai.
The fourth edition of the Public Transport Day comprises a host of events over and above the free use of the mass transit means of Dubai Metro, public buses, water buses and water taxis for Nol Card holders, including a marathon at Burj Khalifa, a used book fair, a showcase of RTA projects, and a procession of boats from Al Shindagha to Al Seef.
The RTA, in cooperation with the Dubai Health Authority, will also conduct medical checkups for interested riders of the Dubai Metro at the Dubai Healthcare City and Airport Terminal 3 stations, where tests on offer would include those for blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, body weight and height, in addition to there being a blood donation campaign at Al Ghubaiba Bus Station.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Public Transport Day initiative, together with other ongoing campaigns and programmes carried out by the RTA, has contributed to encouraging riders to migrate from driving their private vehicles to utilising the mass transit provided by the RTA, demonstrated by the fact that use of the various public transport means in the emirate has doubled from 6 per cent in 2006 to 12 per cent in 2012.
