In another case at the same airport, officials apprehended five foreign nationals who tried to smuggle gold worth Rs.24.4 million
Dubai — The Dubai Police have installed new radars that can detect and record road shoulder violations.
During its testing phase, the radar proved to be “very efficient” in detecting violations, according to Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police.
The radar, he said, has the ability to identify the yellow lines that mark the road shoulders and detect violations.
Overtaking from road shoulders, he said, causes “a lot of problems” especially on roads that see heavy traffic like the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road and Emirates road. “Those overtaking from the road shoulders pose a threat to their own lives and that of other road users as the practice increases the probability of traffic accidents.”
He said the radar, which was designed by the Dubai traffic department, works on an “independent battery” and has a high resolution camera. “The radar was completely designed by the traffic department as those purchased from abroad may not suit the climatic conditions of the emirate. A lot of countries don’t have road shoulders, which prompted us to design a radar that can detect violations in this space.”
He said the new radar was designed in line with the directives from Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, who is “very keen to diversify the methods of monitoring the roads in the emirate to detect violations and save lives”.
Watch: Police published a film showing the new camera is ready for deployment that would hunt drivers overtaking in hard shoulder areas. Video posted on YouTube by 'emaratalyoum website'.
