The Dubai Metro has fast become a favourite public transport in the emirate with nearly 14 million passengers travelling on its Green and Red lines in April, indicating an almost 2-million increase on the figure in April 2013.

Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, acting CEO of Roads and Transport Authority’s Rail Agency, said the high number in April demonstrates that the Dubai Metro has become one of the prime transit means availed by residents, visitors and tourists for mobility and access to the city.

“This year has witnessed a remarkable growth in the number of metro riders compared to the previous year, which has always been the core of our plans tailored to delivering a whole host of initiatives and service improvements capable of enticing all community members to use the metro as a primary transit means characterised by security, luxury and safety,” Al Ali said.

In April, 13,879,636 passengers rode the trains, compared with 11,298,414 riders in April 2013.

The number of rides on both lines in April was 18,354 trips when it had been 16,534 in April 2013.

More passengers took the Red line — 8,806,055 riders, an increase over April 2013 when the number was 7,347,979 riders. Green line riders numbered 5,073,581 riders, up from the 3,950,435 in April 2013.

The Deira City station on the Red line saw the most passengers — 607,150 — followed by the Union (578,918), Burj Khalifa-Dubai Mall Station (577,249) and Al Rigga (539,889) stations.

On the Green line, Al Fahidi station saw the most rush with 579,879 passengers, followed by the BaniYas (539,278), Al Ghubaiba (402,275) and Oud Metha (385,725) stations.
