The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced on Monday that it has completed the first phase of traffic improvements on Abu Dhabi city’s entrances and exits, in a record time of 120 hours of progressive work with no accidents. Completion of the phase was part of its commitment to providing world-class sustainable and integrated transportation infrastructure in line with its Surface Transport Master Plan.

The first phase of traffic improvements included road expansion of the Shaikh Zayed Road for vehicles coming from Al Maqta Bridge heading towards Abu Dhabi city. Works undertaken included increasing the number of lanes from three to four and from two to three at some points, adjusting road markings, adding traffic signals in addition to asphalt surface removal and as well as laying a new asphalt layer in order to boost the road capacity to withstand the expected increase in the number of vehicles.

DoT completed the project as part of the plan set by the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee in a bid to ensure safe, smooth and problem-free vehicle flow to various areas inside the city.

The committee consists of a number of partners including DoT, Abu Dhabi Police, Abu Dhabi City Municipality, and Urban Planning Council.

The project of widening Shaikh Zayed Road is divided in three phases, with the second and third phases to start soon. These two phases will include widening the same road near the Ministries Complex towards Al Maqta Bridge and at the entrance of Al Maqta Bridge from both sides in order to accommodate the growing number of vehicles whilst offering world-class safety standards for all users.

The DoT has embarked on field studies and surveys of congested areas, including Shaikh Zayed Road, and designed solutions ensuring smoother and better vehicle flow, especially at peak (office) hours owing to a larger number of cars.

Following the completion of phase one of the project, DoT is monitoring the current vehicle movement as compared with the previous status and to respond to any urgent issues which may occur. — Wam
