Dh638-million interchange project planned for Capital

The Department of Transport (DoT) on Sunday announced a new highway interchange project costing more than half a billion dirhams that will connect to the under-construction Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) at the Abu Dhabi International Airport.
The department said it has already planned and developed the Dh638-million interchange project that will serve as the main entry to and exit from the new terminal complex, which is scheduled to open by July 2017.
“The new Airport Terminal Complex Network is one of the key strategic projects that will offer the public better accessibility, smooth traffic to and from the yet-to-be-completed Airport Terminal Complex, while enhancing other public transport facilities linked to this or to other projects. Besides, it will be integrated with other future transport modes such as the metro that will be implemented in the future,” said Khalid Rashid Deemas Al Suwaidi, Surface Transport Advisor and Acting General Manager of Main Roads at the DoT.
According to him, access to and from the airport complex will be provided by the main five-lane interchange, ensuring smooth movement to the airport and minimum journey time for the high number of vehicles expected to use these facilities.
A further interchange is planned for the route, providing access to the long-term car park facility located to the north of the new MTC.
The present roundabout junction under the E-10 Main Road will be replaced with an underpass, which will serve the needs of the local traffic to and from the airport, Yas Island Tunnel and the Al Raha Beach development. The plan also encompasses widening the E10 Main Road by adding a lane to the current four lanes in each direction. The widening will extend between the new interchange at Al Raha Beach and beyond the E-10/E12 interchange.
The widening will be constructed within the present median, which divides the main road in order to minimise traffic disruption during construction. The route will be lit with a combination of advanced and conventional road lighting system with special units employed where the E-10 Main Road passes below the airport’s aircraft approach path. When completed, the widened road is expected to meet very high daily and peak hour future traffic flows.
“Commencement of construction works has been phased to coincide with the completion of the new terminal complex. Traffic disruption during construction of the new interchange has been a major consideration of the planning and will be minimised through significant off-road works and substantial traffic detours, which will maintain the current number of traffic lanes throughout the construction period,” Al Suwaidi explained.
Project design phase was conducted in partnership with utility providers in Abu Dhabi and in line with future development plans.
