The planning and survey department in Umm Al Quwain will start renaming 229 roads and roundabouts at the Salma sector in the emirate as per a new geographic address system.
According to a senior official, the sector includes the areas of Salma, Suwaihat, Mohammed bin Rashid, Qarayen and Huboob.
Abdullah Al Mufti, head of addressing and locating section at the department, said the move is the second phase of a simple address scheme that will enable people to locate buildings in the emirate within one metre of accuracy.
"Up to 2,300 houses and institutions in the Salma sector have already been numbered in the first phase of the project so that people can easily reach their desired destinations."
The second phase of the project includes naming 203 minor roads, 11 major roads, and 15 roundabouts, Eng Al Mufti told Khaleej Times. "The smart system acquires real-time coordinates from satellites to provide detailed information about location and access points to buildings and facilities."
Most of the road names are derived from the desert nature around, as well as the UAE heritage, to enhance authentic values and principles, and sustain the national heritage for Emirati people, he elaborated.
Al Mufti said the project will help provide the emirate with a new addressing system to ease procedures and locating of city sights.
"The new system will help customers locate and reach public utilities and entities as conveniently as possible based on the latest technologies for collecting all information and data of the emirate."
He added that all the areas of the emirate of Umm Al Quwain will be given new numbers and addresses by the end of 2016. "As scheduled, the areas of Falaj Al Mualla, Al Rafa, Al Rashidiya, and other areas will have new addresses and numbers next year."
