Lu made the last 32 here for the first time when he got past Michal Przysiezny of Poland in straight sets.

But on a mixed day for Taiwan, Lu’s female compatriot Chan Yung-Jan admitted she needs to get stronger after her second round defeat to the powerful Russian Nadia Petrova.

Lu showed he has the game for grass and now he just wants to keep his focus so he can prolong his dream run in his favourite grand slam.

“I am really happy now because it is the first time in the third round at Wimbledon for me,” Lu told AFP.

“I was in the third round in Australia but this is different because it is on a grass court and it is a traditional tournament.

“I watched Wimbledon as a kid. It was the first grand slam of my playing career so I always hope I can do well here and I have done pretty well. I played very well and I hope I can keep the focus.”

Meyer will be a formidable opponent for Lu, who is bidding to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time in his career.

The German, a quarter-finalist here in 2004, has put out world number 12 Marin Cilic and Mardy Fish, the runner-up at Queen’s Club, on his way to the third round.

Lu added: “Everybody knows he is very good on grass - he has been in the last eight at Wimbledon, he knows how to play on grass and he has beaten two tough opponents.

“I will just try my best like I have in the last two matches. It is important I focus - you don’t know what will happen.

“You have to be patient to get a chance. You might only get one or two in a match and if you take them then the match will be turned.

“I don’t think I have to go last 16 or last eight or anything.”

Chan will return home once her doubles commitments are fulfilled to get stronger for the start of the United States section of the WTA Tour circuit.

She said: “I will spend more time in the gym and get fitter. I have to train more and get more experience.”
