Tatjana Malek of Germany toppled last year’s runner-up, sixth seed Sania Mirza of India, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, while seventh seed Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan retired with an ankle injury when 6-1, 1-0 down to Anastasia Rodionova of Australia.
In the first second-round match, Kazakhstan’s Sesil Karatantcheva defeated eighth seed Julia Goerges of Germany, 6-2, 6-1.
