Senior wins Egyptian Open; UAE’s Ahmed finishes fourth

CAIRO — Following a sensational birdie on the first play-off hole, England’s Jack Senior won the Egyptian Amateur Open at Katameya Heights Golf and Tennis Resort, Cairo, from fellow English international Eddie Pepperell.

The UAE’s Ahmed al Mosharrekh finished with a total of 220 to claim the fourth spot. Third place went to South Africa’s Thabo Maseko, with a three round total of 217, while Mikkel Andersson of Norway took the fifth place.

The top 5 players secured invites to the 2010 Egyptian Open, part of the European Challenge Tour, from October 20 to 23.

With Senior and Pepperell tied after 54 holes on 1 under par with totals of 215, a sudden death playoff was required to separate the English pairing.

At the first play-off hole, the challenging uphill par four home hole at 415 yards, Senior, the lowest handicap holder in England off + 5 sunk a 12 foot birdie putt to seal victory.

Strong winds presented the players with a real challenge during all three rounds of the championship.

The course, beautifully prepared, made for difficult scoring conditions with the best scores of the week coming from South Africa’s Thabo Maseko in the opening round with a 3 under par 69 along with Pepperell’s second round.
