Christian stuns Karim to claim under-12 title

AJMAN — Second seed Christian Linge produced a commendable performance to upset top seed Karim Najia 6-2, 6-1 to win the under-12 boys title of the Ajman Kempinski Junior Open Tennis Championships, a press release said.

Karim Najia has been the most dominant player in his category this season winning every tournament he has entered up to now without losing a set.

Christian, who partners, Karim in the doubles had different ideas when they played on Thursday.

Christian with his athletic and fast movements played an attacking game completely dominating the proceedings in the first set after the games were tied at 2-2.

Chrisitan, one of the few junior players, with a single hand back hand opened up the court with his angled returns to finish points with forehand winners.

Karim who normally plays the ball on the rise and anticipates shots in advance looked slow and lethargic. The second set was a repeat of the first. Karim hardly put up resistance and lost the set 6-1 and the match.

In the girls under-12 final, Rekeeta Pereira was a class above the rest as she beat 9-year-old Mazan Angel 6-0, 6-0.

The youngster Angel though put up a good resistance failed to surpass Pereira.

Earlier in the semifinals, Rikeeta got the better of talented 10-year-old Sonya Plotnikova 6-1, 6-1.

Mazan Angel edged out Anaya Singh 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 in a two and a half hour marathon match.

In the boys-12 semifinals, Karim Najia got the better off Hamdy Ismail 6-2, 6-3 while Christian defeated Adham Ghabr 6-1, 6-4.

The tournament concludes on Thursday with the boys under-14 singles final.
