MAN LANDS ON the Moon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Apple releases a new phone with no earphone jack. we all remember where we were the day some of the world's most momentous occasions took place. Having to take a seat, mouths aghast with wonder, we know these events will be remembered in history, yet at the time they don't seem real.
Well, get used to it friends, now Apple have deemed the jack surplus to requirements, like the VHS player and Myspace, analogue earphones are about to be consigned to the annals of history. Because we all know, once Apple does something, everyone else follows. Soon it'll only be the dodgy flip phones (you know that's nobody's primary phone) that will be left looking even more conspicuous with a wire hanging out of them.
Bluetooth connected earphones are the future. It's just going to happen. So, rather than petition the iPhone makers, it's far easier to accept it. Next year it won't even be a thing.
While the new iPhone is sold with its own Lightning Earpods, it works with any Bluetooth headset, so this week we decided to jump on the bandwagon and test one of the most popular out there, the Sony h.ear in Wireless, behind the neck headphones. These are essentially plug-in earphones attached by small wires to a necklace upon which sit all your usual buttons.
In short, they look cool, provide good quality sound and are pretty sturdy. Here are the other ins and outs.
WHAT WE LIKED
. The battery life on them is very good. While advertised as 7.5 hours, we found 6.5 was more realistic, but that was with constant usage.
. They're light. At only 38g, you can fall asleep with them in or go to the gym.
. They have a built in microphone for calls.
. High resolution audio is transferred via LDAC technology meaning you get three times more data beamed over than with conventional Bluetooth.
. They come in very funky colours.
WHAT WE DIDN'T
. The necklace and button positions take a little getting used to. It's not irritable in any way being smooth plastic, but it's new and we always need time to adjust.
CONCLUSION
Far more likes than dislikes - a preferred product.
