Former Dubai Tennis Championships runner up Mikhail Youzhny of Russia qualified for this edition of the tournament after winning the final round of the qualifiers at the Dubai Tennis Stadium on Sunday
Youzhny beat Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia in straight sets 6-2 6-4 on Sunday to set up a first round clash with wildcard Malek Jaziri of Tunisia.
If Youzhny wins the first round clash, he could face world number one Novak Djokovic in the second round. It was Djokovic who beat him in the final here in 2010.
Youzhny also reached the Dubai final in 2007 when he lost to Roger Federer.
"We are delighted that Mikhail Youzhny has successfully negotiated the qualifying rounds here, and he did so without the loss of a set to emphasise that he is very much back in form after a disappointing season last year," said Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free.
"He will be a formidable opponent for whoever he plays in the main draw."
Meanwhile Tournament Director Salah Tahlak said: "Every one of the qualifying players will have drawn confidence from their performances so far and they will carry the advantage of being accustomed to the courts and conditions when they face their first round opponents.. It will be interesting to see if they can convert that advantage into further success against what is again a strong field."
