In the biggest study involving over 70,000 cases of COVID-19, health officials in China have found that elderly and sick are more at risk.
The study revealed that the highest fatality rate is for people aged 80 and older, at 14.8 per cent. While those with existing illnesses were also most at the risk with cardiovascular disease at number one, followed by diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and hypertension.

The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) published the report, released on Monday, in the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology and pointed out that over 80 per cent of the cases have been mild, reported BBC.
Besides the sick and elderly, medical staff treating patients are also most at risk. A total of 3,019 health workers have been infected, 1,716 of which were confirmed cases and five had died by 11 February, which was the last day of data included in the research.
The study includes all 72,314 cases diagnosed across China as of 11 February, including confirmed, suspected, and asymptomatic cases. It also includes a detailed breakdown of the 44,672 confirmed cases across all of China.
Putting overall death rate of the Covid-19 virus at 2.3 per cent, Hubei province is the worst affected with death rate being at 2.9 per cent compared with only 0.4 per cent in the rest of the country. It classified around 80.9 per cent of infections as mild, 13.8 per cent as severe and only 4.7 per cent as critical.
Who else is at risk?
While in children up to 9, there have been no fatalities and up to the age of 39, the death rate remains low at 0.2 per cent, and increases gradually according to age. The report states that fatality rate was more in men at 2.8 per cent than women at 1.7 per cent.
According to the latest official figures released on Tuesday, a total of 1,868 people have died of COVID-19 and 72,436 are infected.
