Dr Omar Ahmad Abdel Hameed, Head of the Veterinary Services Unit at the municipality, said that the country's air, land and sea ports are considered sensitive points of defence with regards to public health, for which reason the municipality has paid great attention to this aspect.

Dr Omar said that the veterinary services unit examines livestock at the aircraft to check if any died on the way, after which the unit coordinates with the waste disposal section to dispose of any dead animals.

The unit's staff then examine the shipment's papers and health certificates to make sure they are in order and animals on the flight have all the necessary vaccinations.

Dr Omar said that municipal workers then spray special disinfectants and pesticides on the livestock and monitor the animals for a period of time before releasing them.

He said that the municipality has set up disinfection areas at the entrance to the livestock quarantine area at the airport.

Animals are brought from the aircraft into the quarantine area and are sprayed with effective disinfectant.

He said that domesticated animals are received into their own quarantine area after their papers and health certificates are checked after which they are transferred to the primary health care section to treat any wounds suffered by the animals during the trip.
