The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), a recently established government body in Sharjah, took part in the 4th edition of the International Government Communication Forum (IGCF), which concluded on Monday at the Expo Centre, Sharjah.

The SBA stand received a remarkable response from interested participants, prominent officials as well as media personalities, who visited it to gain insight into the authority and its vision, objectives and services, and explore the role of government communication in engaging a broader spectrum of the society in Sharjah’s cultural project.

Speaking on the occasion, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Chairman of Sharjah Book Authority, said: “The authority’s first participation in the International Government Communication Forum adheres to the directives of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to uphold a public presence at a number of major local and global events, in order to introduce guests and participants of the forum to the authority’s mission: promoting the significant role of writers and their influence in spreading community awareness, and encouraging reading in the region and the globe.

“The forum offers us an ideal opportunity to connect with a large group of government communication experts as well as Arab and global media leaders, to make the most of their expertise by supporting and cultivating SBA’s communication strategy.”

Al Ameri stressed that the authority sought through its participation in the forum, a significant platform both locally and internationally, to promote the 34th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), which has steadily grown into one of the world’s fourth largest book expos.

Al Ameri added: “The Forum has succeeded in thoroughly defining relationships between all parties involved in the communication process of government agencies, as well as in identifying ways to better develop government communication in accordance with the latest international practices.

This enables government institutions to respond favourably to public demands and provide them with essential services in an ideal manner, which in turn helps to achieve optimal social, cultural and economic development in societies.

“We made use of the sizable participation of 30 renowned global speakers and thought leaders, an adept team of communication, and media experts along with another 300 indispensable participants, in spreading the SBA message and identifying its cultural role and allowing the participants to gain a deeper understanding of the emirate’s initiatives and its effective contributions at all levels.”

Exchange of knowledge

The visitors expressed their admiration in the role played by the Sharjah Book Authority in supporting exchange of knowledge and intercultural communication between various countries and peoples, as well as in providing the optimum environment for intellectuals, authors, publishers and individuals interested in the written word, to develop their work and further promote their message to effectively advance cultural development, both regionally and globally.

The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) was established in December 2014 through an Emiri decree issued by Dr Shaikh Sultan. SBA is tasked with encouraging investment in creative industries and offering a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas between peoples from different civilisations and cultures.

It is also entrusted with emphasising the significant role of writers and their influence in spreading awareness in society in light of technological advancement and the availability of various sources of knowledge.  The authority assumes the responsibility of enhancing the Emirate’s status on the local, regional and international level to attract relevant bodies and figures operating in the cultural sector in general, and the publishing, printing, translation, documentation and children’s book sector in particular.

The SBA has furthermore vowed to support cultural movement and scientific research at local, regional, and international levels, and suggest legislation that contributes to reviewing and developing book-related policies. - afkarali@khaleejtimes.com
