On the contrary, it stipulates that all citizens, female or male, are entitled to participate in nation building and development, Najeeb Al Shamsi said at a symposium on the ‘Efforts of the UAE to Empower Women’ held here by the Centre of Information Affairs in Abu Dhabi recently ahead of the Second Arab Women’s Organisation (AWO) Conference.

Researchers in women’s issues and development and representatives of the organisations taking part in the AWO Conference on November 11-13 participated in the symposium.

Apart from Najeeb Al Shamsi, the speakers included Mohammed Soubeh, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, and Abdel Hak Al Korri, Director of Logistics Control, Ministry of Public Sectors Modernisation in the Kingdom of Morocco.

A message from Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the UAE Women’s Federation, Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation and Chairwoman of the AWO, was read out at the symposium.

“We are looking forward to the Second AWO Conference and putting our faith in it to ensure a decent life for women in Arab countries,” it said.

Mohammed Soubeh praised the role Shaikha Fatima is playing in highlighting Arab women’s issues and her fruitful contributions to the AWO.

Abdel Hak Al Korri said the Arab world will never be accorded high status among the nations of the world unless they seriously bolster women’s contribution in all fields and provide them with their basic rights stipulated in local laws and international conventions. anwar@khaleejtimes.com
