Not many can say that they have received a gift from the Pope on their birthday. But Fr Michael Cardoz, assistant parish priest at St May's Catholic Church in Dubai can.
On February 5, as he came face-to-face with Pope Francis during the papal mass as part of a select few chosen for the meet, he was blindsided by the generosity of His Holiness.
Like the 14 other priests among him, he received a Rosary from the Vatican. But unlike the others, he received an extra gift; a medal.
"The medal was my gift given by Pope Francis for my birthday. I have no words but a thank you, he is inspiring. This occasion will reverberate with me forever. A special day, and a special birthday."
It was only one week ago that Bishop Paul Hinder reached out to Fr Michael and told him the unexpected news that he would be meeting the pope on February 5.
Already thrilled with the opportunity, he said this extra touch made the day even "more special".
Also speaking to Khaleej Times following the historic mass was Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports and sole organist at the papal mass.
Describing the day as an "incredibly moving experience", he said it's one he will never forget.
"To have been part of such an historic occasion was an honour and a privilege. I also feel that all the teams involved in making the mass into such a dignified event deserve a huge credit. The team involved in the music did a fantastic job and showed what an amazing and eclectic range of talent we have here in the UAE."
