An explosion took place in Mussafah, the industrial area of Abu Dhabi, at approximately 2pm today. There were no casualties.
The incident took place in Gulf Piping Company, which is situated near Abu Dhabi Ship Building. Investigators, police and the civil defense immediately rushed to the scene.
Guatam Kumar, Health and Safety Supervisor at Gulf Piping Company, told Khaleej Times that the investigation is still under process.
“The exact reasons and the root cause of the incident isn’t yet identified because we are still in the process of the investigation and the area has been cordon off, so it’s too early to come to a conclusion as to why the incident happened,” he said.
However, a source at the scene said that the incident took place due to high levels of carbon monoxide leakage. The source also stated that 11 people were injured, with seven in critical condition, and that an evacuation has been ordered. Area up to 500 metres from the incident site will also remain closed.
Kumar, however, did not state the cause of the incident, but confirmed the injuries.
“We are still in the process with the investigation team so I don’t have much information now,” he said, adding that, “because there is an intervention of the police and their team so I have no idea how long the investigation process will take.”
“We don’t have any fatality, we have injuries but no fatality,” he said.
