Aster Hospitals Dubai are set to provide patients with the Endoscopic Intra Gastric Balloon procedure, a procedure that helps deal with weight loss successfully.
In order to achieve weight loss, people tend to adopt diets which involve starvation or are not suited to their bodies, which leaves them feeling moody, hungry, and depressed and quickly giving up on the diet. Therefore, it becomes essential to construct a successful weight loss program using extensive tools.
Keeping this in mind, Dr Amal Premchandra Upadhyay, consultant of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Aster Hospital, Mankhool; and Dr Sudheer Salavudeen, specialist of General Surgery at Aster Hospital, Al Qusais have combined their clinical expertise and team work with endocrinologists, dieticians, health coaches and psychologists to provide patients with a seamless weight loss experience including an Endoscopic Intra Gastric Balloon procedure.
The Intragastric Balloon is an FDA approved procedure guided by an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy where an endoscope is introduced into the patient’s stomach through the mouth and esophagus and the balloon is placed in the stomach and filled with an optimal volume of saline. The balloon promotes early satiety, makes one feel full for a longer period of time, and delays the rate of emptying food from the stomach. The balloon can remain in the stomach for a period of 6 to 12 months after which the balloon needs to be removed endoscopically.
One of the primary benefits of this procedure is that the patient does not need to stay overnight at the hospital. In addition, it does not leave behind any scars, is completely reversible and there is no permanent change in a patient’s anatomy. Patients may experience abdominal cramps or nausea for the first week, post-procedure but these symptoms can be treated using simple medications.
This procedure is best suited for patients who are motivated and committed to losing weight but are unable to do so on their own and can also be recommended to patients who are averse to Bariatric surgery or patients who are candidates for surgery but not fit for anesthesia.
The amount of weight loss, post this surgery, is expected to be between 10-15 per cent of the total body weight and with additional guidance from nutritionists and health coaches, patients can successfully achieve their weight loss goals.
