However, the recent spate of heinous rapes and the murder of a low-caste innocent young girl (in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and recently in Bihar) have cast a dark shadow on the credibility of the new government. These recent news items, reported by Khaleej Times, impart a very bad image about India — nationally and internationally.

No federal government can wash its hands clean (as is the case here) by making it a prerogative of the state government. Public safety and security cannot be compromised. The center must take effective steps to thwart the recurrence of such heinous crimes. A comprehensive change is part of the solution. The erotic scenes on television and the films, which have become quite common during the last two decades in India, must be dealt with strictly.

The new government also needs to get away from the prevailing venal culture. Modi must note that he will get the mandate again only if he performs well and with honesty. The honeymoon cannot last forever.
