Trivandrum: South Indian film actress Kalpana, who made audience laugh with her comedy roles in about 300 films in Malayalam and Tamil, died in Hyderabad on Monday. She was 51 and is survived by 16-year-old daughter Sreemayi.
Kalpana was in Hyderabad for the shooting of a Telugu film. She was brought dead at Apollo Hospitals from her hotel room, where she was found unconscious by her aide early morning, according to film director Sibi Malayil, who was present in the city when Kalpana's end came.
He told a television channel that the doctors at Appollo had identified cardiac arrest as cause of death. The post mortem of her body was done at Osmania General Hospital. The body was later kept at the Film Chamber office at Hyderabad for people to pay homage.

The date and time of funeral are yet to be finalised. Her family members have left for Hyderabad.
Kalpana is the daughter of theatre artists VP Nair and Vijayalakshmi and is the sister of actresses Kalaranjini and Urvashi. Her two brothers Kamal Roy and Prince died in their young age of 17 and 27 respectively. Kalpana was married to Malayalam film director Anil Kumar. The couple got divorced in 2012. Their only daughter was living with Kalpana.
After making debut as a child artist in the 1977 film "Vidarunna Pookkal", Kalpana went on to star in several critically acclaimed films in both Malayalam and Tamil. Her Tamil debut was through the 1985 released successful film Chinna Veedu opposite K. Bhagyaraj. Her other memorable films include Sathi Leelavathi (1995) and Kaliveedu (1996), CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed. (1994) and Dr. Pasupathy (1990).
Kalpana won the National Film Award for best supporting actress for her performance in the movie Thanichala Njan in 2012. Her last film was Malayalam film Charlie starring Dulquer Salmaan. Even though she did a small role, the character Mary was appreciated from movie-goers and critics. Incidentally, she was seen committing suicide in the film directed by Martin Prakkat.
The untimely end of Kalpana has come as a big shock to her fans and the Malayalam film fraternity. "We know that all of us have to die at some point of time, but this one came too early," said fellow comedian and Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) Innocent.
