Vite Royale scrapes to victory

ABU DHABI — Vite Royale made virtually all to prevail by a short-head in the 2200m HH The President Cup Prep feature third race on the card at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club here on Sunday.

Trained by Musabah Al Muhairi and partnered by Wayne Smith, the veteran nine-year-old son of Monarch was the first to leave the machines and held on courageously under pressure when he was challenged by the mount of Kieren Fallon close home.

Tadhg O’Shea brought Tenor Des Vialettes home ahead of stable companion Aqmaar under Richard Hills and public favourite Frynchman, ridden by Kieren Fallon to land the Arabian Triple Crown (Listed) fifth race of the night.

It was a one-two for leading owner Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Minister of Finance, and local trainer Musabah Al Muhairi who trains the duo at the Oasis-1 Stables in Dubai.

RS Khaan came from off the pace under Chris Taylor to win the opening race, a 1600m Arabians UAE Bred Baynoonah Conditions, in good style. The six-year-old was slow to leave the stalls, but he raced against the fences and advanced keenly when was in the clear to lead by three lengths on the line.

AF Al Ghabra just held on to win by a nose under Willie Supple from Albar Lotois, ridden by Gerald Avranche, and a short-head from Jazirat Al Sadyaat in a tight finish in the second race, a 1600m Purebred Arabians Al Khaznah Handicap. The six-year-old daughter of Amer claimed her sixth straight victory for trainer Gillian Duffield.

“She’s a top filly and travels well all the way,” said a delighted jockey William Supple later.

Having finished poor fourth in a prestige event on debut last season, the grey mare returned to the track to take close second in a Maiden race. Again she was beaten on her third reappearance, before she claimed her first victory at the Jebel Ali Racecourse and was never beaten thereafter.

Apprentice jockey Harry Bentley carried his tally to 11 wins after partnering Magroom to victory in the 1600m Purebred Arabians Purebred Arabians Maiden Al Wathba Stud Farm Cup (Private Owners Only) fourth race.

“He ran a big race and did nothing wrong,” said Bentley who claims 3kg which is believed to be of great help for his campaign.

The partnership of Mullen-Seemar won the 1400m Corniche Handicape aboard Montmorency, the only Thoroughbreds contest on the card.

The five-year-old son of Pivotal made all to cruise to his third straight victory of the season at Meydan, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
