The maverick West Indies' wicketkeeper-batsman hit eight sixes in his 29-ball 75 to set-up a comfortable win over the pre-tournament favourites
The day’s showcase event — the Dh500,000 Shadwell Farm, an eight furlong contest, which will run at 3.15pm, will see defending champion Jet Express from the Grandstand Stables and former champion Golden Arrow from the Erwan Charpy’s yard facing the challenge of top milers including the highly-rated Snaafy, winner of the Jebel Ali Mile Trial Otaared and the Mike De Kock representative Wonder Lawn.
Jet Express, under Royston Ffrench, from the all-conquering stables of local trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe is looking forward to retain the title, which he won last year in a bone-crushing battle against Golden Arrow up the hill.
The nine-year-old veteran son of Jet Master was narrowly defeated by Otaared in the trial race a fortnight ago and his trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe said King of the Hill is in good shape to reverse places with his conqueror.
But, more interestingly is the decision of the Oasis-2 Stables’ jockey Wayne Smith who preferred Tayyab to Atlantic Brave. Tayyab, formerly trained by Mike De Kock, ran a cracking race over a shorter distance at the same course two weeks ago and will be hard to beat should the six-year-old son of Belong To Me appreciate the extended trip and reproduced the same performance.
The other horse to watch will be the Mike De Kock raider Wonder Lawn, under Kevin Shea, who struck earlier over a longer distance at the same track.
Meanwhile, the afternoon kicks off at 2.15pm with a 1200m Thoroughbreds Maiden with full field of 14 runners going under the starter’s orders. The mount of Ted Durcan, under Al Razi, looks good to make it a winning start for the Zabeel trainer Satish Seemar.
In the second race, a nine-furlong Thoroughbreds Handicap, top weight Royyati returns to Jebel Ali after winning as he liked at the Meydan All-Weather surface late less December. The immediate danger would be Submariner, ridden by Carlos Sandoval, for trainer Abdulla bin Huzaim.
Dhateer, Kiren Fallon up, may cruise for an easy victory in the 1400m Thoroughbreds Handicap fourth race of the afternoon. In the fifth race, a 1400m Handicap, Jebel Ali-based trainer Dhruba Selvaratnam saddles Kessraa and the gelded son of Kheleyf will be difficult to beat. The final race, a 1200m dash Handicap, will see at least three horses battling out to the wire. Green Beret, under Riyston French, Mahubo, ridden by Kevin Shea, and the mount of William Supple, Satwa Street are in with a chance to win this tough test.
KT Selections: 1. Al Razi 2.Submariner 3. Wonder Lawn 4. Dahteer 5. Kessraa 6. Satwa Street
