Is it possible to use the desalinated water of Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) for drinking and cooking? "Yes," answered Mohammed Saleh, Director General of FEWA.
"All the desalinated water we produce for home-based consumption is absolutely bacteria-free and safe to drink."
However, all water tankers, pipes and fittings at home must be anti-rust, create and leave no residuals at any part of the home water network. The tankers should further be tightly covered to let no pollutants or bugs in."
He said FEWA produces up to 100 million gallons of desalinated water on a daily basis for northern areas of the country. "All the water produced from five main sources is fit for human consumption and can be used in drinking and cooking."
FEWA is now operating 10 water desalination stations that supply the water needs of the people in the northern emirates, including Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, he stated. "Six of these stations produce 44 million gallons of desalinated seawater."
The other four stations produce eight million gallons of desalinated water that initially comes from underground water, Saleh explained.

"FEWA runs other seawater desalination stations that are multi evaporation-operated, and they produce 25 million gallons of water every day. Desalinated water is also imported from other sources in the country to meet the pressing demand."
Saleh pointed out that all the water desalination stations of the Authority produce and distribute desalinated water to the northern emirates through a massive water network.
"All these bulky amounts of water are produced up to the latest international standards and can be safely used in drinking and cooking purposes because they are totally free from any bacterial pollution."
FEWA does daily analyses of samples of water randomly collected from all its water desalination stations to ensure that the water being produced is perfectly clean, safe, sterilised and fit for human consumption.
"The poly ethaline pipes used in transmitting and distributing the water are made of safe materials that are internationally approved while the electric welding of the pipe fittings is tightly done to prevent any leak or external contamination."
All FEWA water tankers and networks are fitted with advanced devices to enhance the sterilisation process and ensure safe storage, transmission and distribution, Saleh added. "The type and validity of the water produced is also examined at FEWA accredited labs on a regular basis."
