Patients that suffer from temporary facial paralysis will soon be able to regain their mobility thanks to a physiotherapy prototype being developed by an Ajman University alumnus.
Ali Mohammed Ridha's 'Smart Prediction System for Facial Paralysis' presentation was recently lauded at the International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering 2020, which drew participants from around the world. In his paper, Ridha proposed a 3D printed system which will help Bell's palsy patients conduct their physiotherapy at home with a smartphone application.
Ridha explained that paralysis is the temporary or permanent loss of muscle functions in any part of the body at any age. The temporary paralysis, in many instances, can be treated by physical therapy without using high potency drugs. Bell's palsy patients suffer from temporary facial paralysis. Ridha's prototype will allow patients to automate their physiotherapy at the comfort of their own homes.
"The proposed prototype performs the facial physiotherapy, as prescribed by the physiotherapist using a smartphone application," he said.
He also explained that the smart app will perform intelligent face mapping, data-logging and progression functions for patients. "This helps patients visualize improvements in their health conditions."
Ridha's winning paper was indexed by Scopus, and supervised by Professor Kamran Arshad, dean of Graduate Studies & Research, and Wessam Shehieb, teaching assistant, College of Engineering & Information Technology.
Professor Kamran Arshad said that International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering presents excellent results on new challenges facing the field. "It brings together experts from industry, governments, and academia, experienced in engineering, design and research."
