Speaking at the Press conference yesterday, Bandula Somasiri, Sri Lankan Consul-General said the two and half hour musical evening is aimed at bringing the Sri Lankan community residing in the UAE closer to home and to their culture and music.
The two leading singers, who are also winners of several national and international music awards, will be accompanied on the show by Dharmasiri Gamage, leading Film director and Rohana Weerasingh, music director from the Sri Lankan films and Television.
Mr Somasiri said that the artistes would also meet on Friday (May 9) over 200 Sri Lankan expatriate children who are students of the Cultural School housed on the Consulate premises in Dubai. They will exchange and share with the students the music and culture of Sri Lanka and through their music spread the message of peace in the island nation.
Nanda Melanie, the 'nightingale of Sri Lanka' who has been singing for over 40 years is on her fourth trip to the UAE. "I am excited to be in Dubai and to sing to the audience, a variety of semi-classical and folk songs from Sri Lankan films as well as patriotic and religious songs ranging over a period of five decades. I hope my renditions will help bridge the gap between the Sri Lankan residing overseas and their compatriots back home."
"Music is a popular medium which artistes often use to reach out to the masses and spread the message of love, peace and culture. My songs at this concert also aim to render similar service to those living in the UAE encouraging them to spread the message of love, peace and patriotism among themselves," said Melanie, who has to her credit some of the highest music awards including 10 President award, 12 times winner of 'Sarasaviy' award and the International Catholic Organisation award presented to top artists in Sri Lanka. "I will be singing some love songs as well, but they will be songs based on the love for the country and for the people," the singer said.
Melanie will be accompanied by leading male playback singer Sunil Edrisinghe who has sung several popular Sinhalese songs. Edrisinghe will present duets with Melanie in addition to solo numbers from his popular films and TV programmes.
Rohana Weerasinghe who is accompanying the artistes to the concert said the singers would sing several of his popular compositions in Sinhalese. Weerasinghe who is also known as the 'Melody Machine' of Sri Lanka has composed over 2,000 film and non-film songs.
The concert which is to start at 8.30pm will be presented by Sri Lankan filmmaker, Dharmasiri Gamage.
Entry to the concert is by tickets priced at Dh60 and Dh40 and are available at the Crowne Plaza box office, Hadi Exchange in Bur Dubai and Frico International.
