Speaking to Khaleej Times, Engineer Al Waleed bin Khadem, Director-General of Sewa, said that Sewa has decided to activate the rule as part of its efforts to ensure water conservation in the emirate. Under the rule, Sewa could penalise individuals and companies for wasting water.

The rule targets the car wash facilities, factories, laundries , gardens and any other kinds of business that use water in the services they provide for the public.

The car wash companies must introduce water recycling system to conserve water, he said.

He pointed out that Sewa during its ongoing campaign which aimed at promoting sustainable use of water and energy in the emirate, had started replacing the old meters with digital ones which were considered accurate and would contribute a great deal in water reservation. Sewa also is conducting a study to find a practical solution to curb water wastage which has become a critical issue in the emirate. Eng Bin Khadem urged the villa and house owners to immediately to call Sewa’s closest office in case water leakage is detected. Water leakage is one of the main factors of water wastage. “Water in the emirate comes from desalination plants which are extremely expensive and only a few countries can afford them. As such water is a valuable resource but it is easily wasted by the public in the emirate,” he added
