The Princess of Wales announced in March she was having treatment after cancer was found following an abdominal surgery
Razak Orumanayoor, a reporter for Malayalam newspaper f+iChandrikaf-io, which is based in the capital, has just seen the publication of 10,000 copies of his latest booklet f+iUAE Amnesty Guidef-io in Malayalam, which he hopes will serve as an information guide for all Keralites wishing to avail of the amnesty.
"In the initial stages of the amnesty, I tried to get some details and I found it impossible and no one had access to the correct information. So I decided to write a guide, frankly as a social service to all those helpless people who didn't seem to know what to do," he said.
When Mr Orumanayoor approached the Indian Embassy with his 18-page booklet, embassy officials expressed delight and wanted him to translate the same into other languages, particularly English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
Mr Orumanayoor, however, feels handicapped by the expense involved in such an enterprise.
"I was only able to publish this because of the support I got from Air India, Chancellor Watches and Al Zaabi Travels. If someone is willing to help, I can perhaps go ahead with translation, atleast into English, which would be of use to not only Indians, but other expats in the UAE, who want to avail of the amnesty," Mr Orumanayoor said.
He admits the booklet will be a hit, with the amnesty likely to conclude at the end of April.
He said that the booklet had so far received a favourable response from the Ministry of Information & Culture, the Immigration Department and other authorities and individuals.
Mr Orumanayoor, who has compered programmes for Middle East TV, one of the earliest Malayalam television channels in the region, has been actively interested in social work, involved in helping to send dead bodies of expatriate Indians back home, in the absence of any relatives or friends being there to claim them, etc.
He has contributed to several Malayalam periodicals, and is also the author of f+iGulf Malayaleef-io, a 200-page novel, published over two years ago.
For more details on the booklet, those interested can contact Mr Orumanayoor on 050-6233649.
