Wife of the President and Chairperson of the UAE Women's Association, four couples of the 'Dar Zayed for Comprehensive Welfare' tied the knot on Wednesday.
The wedding ceremony, first of its kind in the UAE, was held at the Welfare premises in a special ceremony at Al Khazna in Abu Dhabi.
In a statement on the occasion, Shaikha Fatima said: "This day is one of the greatest as I see these young couples get ready for a stable social life."
Shaikha Fatima also wished the young couples a happy life and extended her gratitude to the staff of the Welfare for the efforts they were putting to care of the youth.
Ali Salim Al Amiri, Director of the Welfare Centre, spoke on the keenness of the President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and Shaikha Fatima to support the members of the Centre.
"Since the establishment of the Welfare Centre in 1988, Shaikh Zayed and Shaikha Fatima have been supporting the orphans sheltered by the Centre and fulfilling their needs," said Mr Amiri.
He also praised the efforts of Shaikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of the President's Private Department and Director of the Centre, in providing members of the orphanage with necessary social, educational and psychological needs of life.
"This resulted in great achievements made by the young men and women of the Centre in the educational, cultural and scientific fields," he said.
He added that some of the Centre's residents are pursuing their post-graduate studies while other members of the orphanage have clinched Arab and local cultural and sport awards. The main objective of the Centre is to forge ties between these orphans and the society while inculcating in them the values of the Islamic teachings, said Mr Amiri.
We also have a follow up programme for those who leave the orphanage, so as to provide them with special care and help them carry on with their social life, he said.
'Dar Zayed for Comprehensive Welfare Centre', houses about 344 young men and women of different ages, supervised by around 95 social specialists, psychologists and governesses. According to the directives of Shaikh Zayed, which aims at expanding the activities of the Centre, the number of the orphans is expected to increase by 15 per cent.
Meanwhile, Fatima Al Niyadi, Social Expert at the Centre, said that the orphanage in cooperation with the Marriage Fund has conducted a rehabilitation programme for those who wish to get married.
The programme focused on raising the awareness of the orphans about the meaning of family and the importance of family bonds in building a strong social structure, said Mrs Niyadi.
For their part, the couples thanked Shaikh Zayed and Shaikha Fatima for their care and promised the President to contribute effectively in the process of the national development.
