As rain enhancement gains traction across the world due to water scarcity, the UAE stands at the forefront of innovations with a slew of projects in progress and in the pipeline.
Ready to showcase its achievements in the field, the country has started gearing up for the upcoming edition of the International Forum on Rain Enhancement Science, set to bring together crowds of highly acclaimed experts in Abu Dhabi in January 2020.
The UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science continues to advance new knowledge related to cloud seeding, through dynamic, scientific and technology innovations.
Currently, the programme is developing cost-effective, sustainable, and environment-friendly solutions to water stress.
It was launched under the patronage of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, and managed by the National Centre of Meteorology.
This year, higher volumes of rainfall have been recorded in the UAE - proof that the country's rain enhancement efforts are bearing fruit, according to the environment minister.
"The significant increase in the amount of rainfall being received in the UAE can be attributed to the success of cloud seeding," Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, earlier told Khaleej Times.
"Our collaboration with leading experts and researchers from across the world through the rain enhancement programme will definitely boost the country's water supply in the future."
Ongoing research project
Dr Linda Zou, a professor at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, has completed a ground-breaking project investigating the possibility of increasing rainfall through unique "cloud seeding nanomaterials".
The project has been successful - so much so that cost-effective, large-scale production of Zou's nanomaterials is already in the works. Real-world testing has begun in August this year.
