Priority will be given to unemployed Emirati recruits for public jobs, according to a federal draft law of the mandatory military service approved by the Federal National Council (FNC) on Tuesday. The law aims at forming an extra national defence force to protect the country and maintain its borders.
In its latest session, the FNC, under the chairmanship of Speaker Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, discussed eight articles of the 44-article draft law. The session was attended by Dr Hadef Jowan Al Dhahiri, Minister of Justice, and Lieutenant-General Hamad Mohammed Thani Al Rumaithi, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces.
The draft law tackled the general provisions that govern the law such as specifying the competent authority that will take up training of the recruits and its procedure. They also discussed the benefits to recruits like retaining civil post, entitlement to monthly salary or retirement pension, and all other vocational rights.
The FNC discussed the structure of the force, its provisions and penalties.
The draft law underscored that the protection of the UAE, and maintaining its independence and sovereignty, is a “sacred national duty” of each and every Emirati. Recruiting local youth in the national military service will stoke their sense of patriotism and enhance their personalities.
Under the law, mandatory military service forms a “tributary that strengthens the capability and efficiency of the armed forces”. The experience gained will change a recruit’s outlook of life, and cement their loyalty and participation. It also serves as a “vehicle for intellectual studies”.
