“We played a big game and the result was not actually not a fair indication of how we played,” said Bani Yas team manager Saleh Ismail later.

Having claimed full points in their opening two games at home and away, Bani Yas expected to do the same against what they have believed to be much weaker Dubai side.

Al Wasl were easily beaten 0-4 by city rivals Al Ahli in the Dubai derby last weekend, but the Cheetahs, as they are nicknamed, knew how to overcome the humiliating defeat and took their opponents by surprise with a fourth minute strike from Maher Jasim.

“I don’t agree that the early deficit adversely affected our players. They fought back and created many scoring opportunities without luck in front of the goal,” Ismail commented.

Ironically, it was the first goal to be conceded by Bani Yas in the national league after keeping the back of their net intact in two appearances.

However, Bani Yas’ attempts to level the result were all in vain and it was in fact Al Wasl who made the most of a fast counterattack to double the score-line at the hour mark.

Alexander Oliveira controlled a long pass from the centre of the field and sent a lovely through to Francisco Yeste who was perfectly poised in-between the poorly deployed Bani Yas defenders. The Spanish forward outpaced Bani Yas defenders and beat the keeper with a beautiful move.

The second goal shocked the visitors and made their job much more difficult with half an hour remaining. But they refused to give up and redeployed the squad in a clear offensive strategy. Bani Yas’ Tunisian coach replaced Saleh Haboush with Ahmed Ali in the last ten minutes without much improvement. Ivorian Sebghore was closely marked by Al Wasl defenders and Zeyab Awana was far from his best upfront.

In the 67th minute, Singhore reduced the deficit to 1-2 and revived his team’s hopes to make a strong return to the game. But, Al Wasl players knew how to maintain their narrow advantage to the delight of the die-hard fans who packed the small venue.
