Minute’s silence before Iraq vs Iran match cut short

DOHA - A planned minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the victims of Sunday’s air crash in Iran which killed nearly 80 people lasted only about 10 seconds before Iraq played Iran in the Asian Cup on Tuesday.

The players of both sides stood around the centre circle but the crowd ignored Uzbekistan referee’s Ravshan Irmatov’s whistle to start the silence and he signalled the end of it just a few seconds later.

Sporting rivalry between the two neighbouring states has had an added edge since they fought an eight-year war in the 1980s.
