Japan took the lead early in the second half when Adnan Rashid put the ball in his own net when attempting to cut out a cross.

Despite that setback, the UAE battled hard for an equaliser and it finally arrived in the 89th minute through skipper Ahmed Khalil. But Mohammad dropped a cross one minute later and Hiroshi Ibusuki pounced to secure all three points for Keiichiro Nuno’s side in the Group C encounter.

The UAE were the first to get sight of the goal after five minutes when Omar Abdulrahman played the ball between two defenders just inside the area and Rashed Hassan Ali ran through but drove his shot just over the bar.

Japan, meanwhile, were rarely getting beyond the halfway line and the only time they called Mohammad into action in the first 30 minutes was when he had to catch Gotoku Sakai’s deep cross.

But despite failing to produce any clear cut chances, Japan finished the first half strongest and in a bid to strengthen their attack they introduced exciting forward Takashi Usami for Nagai at the start of the second half. And while Usami was not directly involved, he played a part in the opener seven minutes after the restart as Takumi Abe delivered a cross from the left meant for the Gamba Osaka youngster only for defender Rashid to poke the ball into the back of his own net.

After starting the game so strongly, the UAE had been much quieter in the early exchanges of the second half but should have equalised just after the hour when Khalil delivered a fine cross across the face of goal for the unmarked Hassan Ali but the Al Shabab midfielder drove his shot high over the bar.

And Japan had goalkeeper Goro Kawanami to thank for keeping the scores level in the 75th minute when Hassan Ali fed a pass inside the area for substitute Majed Hassan. The midfielder showed good control to skip the challenge of two defenders and it seemed certain that Hassan would level the scores but Kawanami rushed out to block the Al Ahli player’s shot before smothering the ball with UAE forwards lurking.

Again Kawanami kept the UAE at bay as Khalil delivered a rasping volley from Hassan Ali’s cross that the Japan shot-stopper did well to punch away to safety.

But there was nothing Kawanami could do when the UAE appeared to snatch a draw as the ever-dangerous Khalil stabbed home from a free-kick with one minute remaining.

However, Japan immediately responded as a seemingly harmless cross by Sakai was dropped by Mohammad and Ibusuki reacted quickly to slot home the winner.

In another clash, goals in each half from Ji Dong-won and Jung Seung-yong saw Korea Republic begin their AFC U-19 Championship challenge with a 2-0 win over Iran in an entertaining encounter at Linzi Stadium.
